2 Caffeine Content
Caffeine is a kind of antibody for the coffee plant.
The robusta also contains more caffeine because it grows at lower altitudes and therefore has a greater presence of insects.
This is the reason for producing more caffeine, to defend against insects.
Arabica, on the other hand, grows above 1,000 metres altitude where there is less insect infestation, so Arabica has less need to produce its own antibody, caffeine.
This factor is important to consider for those who have difficulty falling asleep after drinking an extra coffee. What kind of coffee was it?
3 Arabica VS Robusta: Origins
Arabica (which, by the way, accounts for 70% of the world’s coffee production) is mainly grown in South America, Central America and “reef” Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and East Africa in general.
Robusta, on the other hand, is mainly produced in West Africa (Cameroon, Ivory Coast, etc.) and the Far East (Vietnam and Indonesia first). In addition to this, Arabica grows best at high altitudes, above 1,000 metres, and needs a lot of rain, while Robusta grows at lower altitudes and in, let’s say, less ideal conditions in terms of humidity and type of soil; it also has fewer problems with diseases.
Arabica beans have a sweeter, gentler flavour than other beans, with honey, fruit, and berries notes. Their acidity is more robust, giving them the winey taste that coffee with high acidity is known for. On the other hand, Robusta has a more intense, burnt flavour, with a grainy undertone and a walnut-like aftertaste.
Arabica plants take many years to mature, but they bear fruit very fast and in large quantities once they have. Robusta, on the other hand, is much easier to cultivate. They thrive at lower elevations and are less susceptible to pests and weather like Arabica is.
Coffee can be a very personal taste. Some people love sweet and gentle flavours, and others love a more intese and robust flavour.
