Why Arabica Coffee Beans Have Less Caffeine

Arabica coffee beans naturally contain less caffeine than Robusta coffee beans due to genetic and botanical differences between the two coffee species.

On average Arabica coffee beans contain around 1.2%–1.5% caffeine and Robusta coffee beans contain around 2.2%–2.7% caffeine

Arabica plants grow at higher altitudes and in more delicate environments, where there are generally fewer insects and environmental threats. Because of this, the plant naturally produces less caffeine, which acts as a natural defence mechanism against pests.

Robusta plants, on the other hand, are hardier and often grow in warmer, lower-altitude regions with greater exposure to insects and disease. To protect itself, the Robusta plant develops significantly higher caffeine levels.

This lower caffeine content is one reason why 100% Arabica coffee is often appreciated for its:

  • Smoother flavour
  • Lower bitterness
  • Softer acidity
  • More refined aromatic complexity
  • Gentler caffeine impact
